Let's Count to 3 And Then We'll....
A school psychologist once explained to me that tantrums can sometimes be prolonged when a little one doesn't know what to do next. Crying is the same, so try offering a marker for the end and then something to do that's different than crying. "Let's count to 3 and then we'll go get a drink of water," is something that can work to shorten a crying fit.
