12. Postpartum Psychosis Is An Emergency
Postpartum psychosis is rare and the biggest risk factor is a previous psychotic episode. It’s also the most serious of postpartum mental health issues and is considered an emergency situation.

Psychosis is a break from reality and has a five percent suicide rate. Some symptoms are hallucinations, delusions (events or beliefs that aren’t real), extreme mood swings and feelings of paranoia. It’s serious and left untreated, it can be devastating to the mom and her family. If these feelings occur, immediate help is needed, and often times hospitalization is necessary to help the mother.
