2. Harry And Meghan Sat Down With Oprah To Tell Their Side Of The Story
In their first sit-down interview since their engagement in November 2017, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex spoke with Oprah Winfrey for a two-hour prime-time program that aired on Sunday, March 7. The couple detailed how their treatment by the British press and the royal institution led to their decision to leave the royal family and move to California, including the startling revelation that Meghan had been having suicidal thoughts and felt unable to get help.

"I was ashamed to say it at the time and ashamed to have to admit it to Harry. But I knew that if I didn't say it — then I would do it," she said. "I just didn't want to be alive anymore."

She continued, "That was clear and real and frightening and constant thought."

Meghan said she "thought it would have solved everything for everyone."

“I remember how [Harry] just cradled me. I went to the institution. And I said that I needed to go somewhere to get help. And I said that I’d never felt this way before. I need to go somewhere. And I was told that I couldn’t, because it wouldn’t be good for the institution.”

Prince Harry also drew parallels between the treatment of his late mother, Princess Diana, and Meghan. The royal told Oprah his "biggest concern was history repeating itself.” Prince Harry, of course, was referencing the 1997 car crash that killed the Princess of Wales. The high-speed pursuit, which involved photographers, led to a contentious relationship between Prince Harry and the British press.

These challenges were layered with the fact that race was an issue for the royal institution from the very beginning with Meghan — unnamed members had questioned what the color of their children's skin would be, denied Archie the title of prince after his birth, and refused to provide Archie with security. All of which makes it easier to understand why the pair stepped back as working members of the royal family.
