Sanity-Saving Things To Say (And Do) When Your Child Isn't Listening

1. Help Them Access Their Left Brain
The left side of the brain is where we get our ability to rationalize. Unfortunately, when it comes to children, the development of the left brain takes many years and the natural response to challenging situations is to access the right side, which is highly emotional.

Accordingly, it's important to help your child calm down before giving directions. They will have an easier time listening if they aren't stuck in their right brains.

Need strategies for accessing calmer emotional states? The Whole Brain Child is a great resource.
