On a federal level, FMLA offers families 12 weeks of job protection (at companies with 50 or more employees) but zero weeks of paid maternity leave. While a handful of states offer some form of paid leave, 42 states offer no pay whatsoever. California is the only state in the country to offer paid leave to both men and women. Accordingly, the United States ranks the lowest of the countries on our list for supporting new families.
