So how do you know when you're done? In my opinion, you can rest easy (literally and figuratively) when your child reliably sleeps through the night in familiar situations.
Even the most solid of sleepers is going to have their off nights. They're going to get sick, and they're going to have nightmares. A parent's absence or a vacation are going to throw them off. But if, in general, you don't see your child's smiling face until morning, you can confidently call it a slumbering success.
