Implement A New Rule
One way to eliminate the power struggle is to tell your kid that they don't have to go to sleep, but they do have to stay in bed. They are free to read, play quietly, or sleep. Most kids will enjoy having a little bit of control, and with nothing more stimulating than a book or stuffed animal, they'll often fall asleep on their own.
