Unless you're an adoptive parent, this probably sounds harmless. In fact, this is one of the most common things adoptive parents hear, and it never stops grating on our nerves. People intend it as a compliment, so I try to receive it kindly. You see, our children are not lucky — they’ve suffered immense loss and will carry trauma with them for the rest of their lives. Adoptive parents don’t want to be seen as saviors, just as parents. We feel like we are the lucky ones.
