It's good for mom and baby to rest, but there's no need for a traditional lying-in period. Once mom is up to it, she can take the baby outside. It's good for both of them to get some fresh air, and outings can help alleviate feelings of isolation.

That being said, crowded places and enclosed spaces aren't a good idea because lots of people means lots of germs.
