Bad advice about car seats abounds. Actually, they do need to be buckled in even for a short trip and it's not safe to buy a used car seat. But perhaps more dangerous because of its pervasiveness is the guideline to turn children's seats around when they reach 20 pounds. 

Experts now recommend that kids remain rear-facing until they are at least 2 years old and preferably longer. This is the best position to protect their head and neck in a crash.
