Real Breastfeeding Questions Answered By A Lactation Consultant

Latching and bottle issues continued…
QC: If your baby is nursing well but won’t take a bottle I would try to offer it before the baby gets too hungry and if that doesn’t work, wait until the baby is very hungry. I’d try a couple different bottles with different flow rates. I usually suggest slow flow but if you have a fast milk ejection reflex your baby may prefer a medium flow nipple. Also having your partner or a caregiver offer the bottle instead of you may be helpful.

If the baby won’t latch or drink from a bottle see your doctor right away. If the baby won’t latch on the breast but will take milk from a bottle that’s a different story, and something you should discuss with your pediatrician and lactation consultant.
