14. Induction
An induction is when labor is either started or accelerated using artificial means. Options include medication (such as synthetic prostaglandins or Pitocin) and stripping or rupture of the membranes. Induction is necessary when you're well past your due date or your water has broken but labor hasn't begun on its own.
