12. Episiotomy
A surgical procedure, an episiotomy is an incision to the perineum (the area between the vagina and anus) designed to widen the vaginal opening in order to facilitate delivery. Although no longer routine (natural tearing actually carries less chance of damage), they are sometime required, such as in the case of an assisted delivery.
