12. Off-Limit Foods
The foods that should be avoided in pregnancy are the ones that can cause harm to a fetus. The American Pregnancy Association warns against eating raw or undercooked meat or seafood, cold deli meat and high mercury fish. Make sure to cook meats and seafood to their proper temperatures, and heat up deli meat in the microwave until it steams to destroy lingering bacteria that can contain listeria. Make sure the eggs and soft cheese you eat have been pasteurized. Stop drinking alcohol as soon as you find out you’re pregnant, and limit your caffeine or eliminate it during the first trimester. Understand that your diet changes are just temporary, even though it’s not fun giving up raw sushi.
