17. Reassure Your Child If They Need Additional Soothing
Seasoned parents know things don't always go as planned. When baby is having trouble going to sleep, Dr. Bailey recommended,"If they cry when you walk away, come back and rub their backs until they settle. If my daughter keeps standing up, I gently lie her back down and tell her it is time to go to sleep. Some nights I have had to do this 20-30 times. If you keep at it, she learns that you are there to comfort her but that her cries will not get you to pick her up unless, of course, you think there is something wrong (hunger, poo-poo diaper, illness, etc). Please do pick up your baby if you are concerned."
