Even better than saying, "What happened?" asking your child to tell you about it gives them permission to freely speak. It sounds less intimidating than other questions and can be used for a variety of situations. One of the things I say to my toddler when she brings me a work of art is to ask her to tell me about it. That way I'm not confusing the squiggly lines on there for a balloon when really she drew me.
