How Are You Feeling?
I used to ask my husband all the time when he was appearing troubled, "Are you OK?" And then I realized how much I myself hated that question when it was said to me. In fact, my husband was much more willing to open up when I asked him something less intimidating such as, "How are you feeling?" So if it works on adults, how can kids be any different?

Even toddlers can be taught how to answer this question as you work on identifying emotions and feelings. My daughter can tell me, "I'm mad!" when I asked her how she's feeling and we can work through it, using appropriate language.
