Research shows that grandparents who help care for their grandchildren live longer. It helps them stay physically active, and the social interaction is good for aging brains. It's linked to decreased rates of depression and may even be preventative against Alzheimer's. 

So grandbabies are good for you, but we're kidding ourselves if we think grandparents are getting the better end of the deal. Whether they're primary caregivers, a weekend babysitter, or your go-to resource when baby's poop is a funny color, grandmothers are essential to motherhood. 

That's not to say that all grandmas do all (or even any) of the following. But those of us lucky enough to have moms, mothers-in-law, and other women who are like mothers to us, involved in the lives of our children know that we are lucky enough.
