Night terrors are something you probably won’t think about as a parent until they’re happening in the room next door. I thought about diapers and formula and discipline and teaching my kids manners, but night terrors surprised me. They also terrified me. But as with most parental worries, night terrors aren’t quite as scary when you know more about what they are and how to help your child.

Our daughter gets night terrors when she’s sick or when she’s overtired, two of the common triggers. Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do to prevent sickness in a toddler, and we try to encourage as much sleep as humanly possible! But a transatlantic move this summer meant tiredness was inevitable and night terrors hit their peak. Luckily, they seem to have subsided and I’m able to share the tips and tricks that helped us get through a hard season.
