Seek Flexibility
Just because you want and/or need to work doesn’t mean it has to be in the same fashion you worked before you had kids. Many employers are receptive to job sharing, working part-time, and/or telecommuting. Likewise, split shifts are increasingly popular where you work a few hours, take care of family responsibilities, and then work a few hours later in the day or evening.

If your current employer doesn't offer any flexibility, you may want to consider looking elsewhere or rethinking what you do for work. With a little creativity, you might be surprised by how you can piece together a living, advance your career, and also take care of your family. Women are traditionally more risk adverse than men, so don't be afraid to ask for what you want or try something new.
