What are some of the most common reasons women seek support from a lactation consultant and when would you recommend for someone to visit a lactation consultant?
QC: The two most common problems I see are latching issues causing nipple pain and soreness and low milk supply. But I also see moms who just need reassurance that things are going well and their baby is getting enough to eat. Because you can’t physically see how much your baby is getting from the breast, some moms need reassurance that their baby is in fact getting enough food. We also go over positioning so moms can help avoid sore backs and be more comfortable during nursing sessions.

Lactation consultants are experts in helping new moms through all of their breastfeeding challenges or concerns, so I’d recommend for any woman experiencing pain or if she’s feeling uneasy, to reach out to an IBCLC and possibly get some hands on help. Sometimes just a few tweaks can make all the difference.
