Help Them Review Themselves
Try asking your child how they think they did at something. Whether it is a day of play with friends, (How did you do at being a good friend today?), or an activity, (How did you do at your basketball game?), it is a great conversation starter. You can follow up the question asking them what they think they can improve on and what they think they did well. Ask them what they think they will do next time. It is so much more effective to ask your child to reflect and review themselves than to criticize, praise or lecture. They will eventually pick up the habit and be able to look back on their own actions and make conscious changes themselves.
