13. Myth: Homeschool = Recreating School At Home
Truth: New homeschoolers often fall into the trap of trying to recreate a school classroom at home. Desks, whiteboards and colorful posters make for an inviting classroom but in your home, they’re unnecessary. We might imagine standing in front of our kids with a pointer in hand or sitting in circle time on the rug to go over the alphabet because those are our memories of how learning happened. The truth is that sitting at the dining table beside your kid works better than lecturing from the front of the room. Snuggling on the sofa to read together is the best way to encourage literacy. Homeschool isn’t about recreating school at home, it is about combining education and homelife so there is no longer a distinction between the two.
