Think of the hardest athletic event you know of and then triple it. That’s what labor and delivery is like — not to mention further difficulties like tears, episiotomies, or a c-section.

Basic recovery often takes four to six weeks, but full recovery can take months. Remember that she will need to (and should) rest, especially in those initial days after the birth.

Each woman and each birth is different. Try to support her in her recovery and not compare her to where you think she should be. And remember that resting at the beginning will pay off: she’ll make a full recovery much quicker.
